Do you more often than not feel edgy and uncomfortable at your own home? It could be that your home is full of negative energy, so it needs a bit of “negative energy dusting.”
Although no one can see this bad energy with a naked eye like the dust, everyone can certainly feel it as the energy of their home every so often reflects the emotional state of the home owner.
Psychologists say that: “your ‘inner emotional engine’ can demean your value, destroy your confidence, derail your dreams, diminish your imagination and dampen your abilities.”
Although negative and positive energies will always exist like yin and yang (dark-bright interconnection and interdependence in the natural world), the solution is to decrease the amount of negative energy so that you can lead a more relaxed and happier life.
Environmentalists and ergonomics alike suggest many different ways to remove negative energy from your living and working space, which can go a long way in restoring balance and harmony in your own life as well as that of your family members.
However, we suggest that you try these top 10 ways to “pack” the negative energy out from your home:
1. Smudging with a herb
You may not know that smudging is one of the oldest and most effective ways to remove negative energy that makes you feel as if under a spell. This very old tradition is still very popular among the Native American people. The sage herb is the most popular one for smudging because, when it is burned, it releases large amounts of negatively-charged ions in the air, which neutralize the positive charge in the air.
Curiously enough, negative ions also help improve your sense of well-being and mental clarity. In addition, the aroma of sage is truly relaxing and soothing.
You can buy sage sticks in the market or you can even make your own sage bundle at home. Just pick up some sage sprigs and dry them out in the sun.
When well-dried, bind the sprigs tightly together with a string or twine. That’s it – your sage stick is ready for smudging. Just follow these steps:
- Before you start the process, you need to clean your house and open all the doors and windows as well as cupboards and drawers.
- To smudge, light a rolled stick of sage placed in a fireproof container to keep the ash and embers safe inside.
- Cautiously fan the sage with your hand.
- Start off the process by cleansing yourself first by lightly fanning the smoke into your body from the feet up to your head.
- Walk slowly around the rooms of your home, swirling it in circular motions, concentrating on the walls, corners, floor as well as the ceiling. Stand on the left side of the rooms all the time.
- Stay affirmative during the smudging process to promote positivity.
- When you’re done, get the burning sage out of your house, and put it in an open area to burn down completely.
Note: Apart from sage, other sweet-smelling herbs and plants that can be used for smudging are: lavender, cedar, and pine.
2. Cleaning up
Clutter and dirt are ‘warehouses’ of negative energy, so when you enter a clean and clutter-free room, you feel good. The opposite feeling happens when you enter a dirty and untidy room.
Hence, every time you clean, you are automatically cleaning the negative energy too. For this reason, cleaning your home and workspace should be your weekly priority to help fill the area with more yang (bright) energy.
3. Furniture repositioning
Change your room arrangement from time to time as negative energy needs objects to “hang on.” Just rearranging the position of your furniture elements is enough to break the chain of bad energy. So, move around the furniture in your house once a year. While doing it, put accent to open space and your comfort.
Experiment with the arrangement until you feel that your room is truly enjoyable. Anything that does not give you a good feeling is just not the right arrangement. You can also consult a Feng Shui specialist or an interior design specialist.
Note: Do not keep damaged décor items or anything that you can no longer use. Just give them away.
4. Let sunlight and fresh air in
Sunshine and fresh air have immense restorative powers. The intrinsic positive energy of nature will always make you feel splendid! So, allowing a lot of sunshine and plenty of fresh air to enter your home is a very simple and cheap way to boost positivity.
You won’t fell wrecked no matter what has happened to you. Right after you get up in the morning, open the windows and doors to allow fresh air and sunlight in and negative energy out.
Even standing for a while near an open or ajar window can help. Sunlight helps your body produce vitamin D, which is important for your overall health and stamina. Bright sunlight can definitely relieve anxiety and reduce depression. And not just your body and room, your washed laundry and house plants need drying out in the sunlight too.
5. Sea salts
Another means to neutralize the negative energy in your home and within you is to use sea salts. It is believed that sea salts help generate negative ions in the air, thus creating desired positive vibes. This is what you do:
- Add a few tablespoons of sea salt of choice to a cup of warm water and stir it thoroughly until the salt thoroughly dissolves. Put the solution in a spray bottle. Spray all the corners of your home with this solution.
- Sprinkle some sea salt over the entire room, especially in the corners that face the northeast and southwest directions. Leave it overnight, and then vacuum up the salt. Discard the salt particles outside.
- If you want to detox your body, put 1 cup of sea salt in a bathtub filled with warm water. Soak your body in this water for 15-20 minutes for a relaxing and purifying bath.
6. Loud clapping
Science says that the sound and vibrations made with loud clapping of your hand palms help break up negative energy patterns, and allow them to disperse. Yes, loud and clear sounds are a powerful cleansing method for the home, so spread that “applause” around your house. No one will mind, except if they are sleeping!
Here is the parallel: Mother Nature with its noisy thunderstorms and lightning actually does the same! Even the sound of fireworks and church bells feels so calming and cleansing, right?
Again, walk through your home clapping all around, especially in corners, on shelves, and under the stairs to chase out that “stale negativity” from your living space. The sound of your clapping should be crisp and light. Avoid heavy and sluggish clapping as it promotes negativity. While clapping, you can use bells, chimes, drums or Tibetan bowls to break the negative momentum patterns. In fact, it looks like that’s the secret and origin of music: To break negative energy and bring about positivity!
7. Essential oils
Essential oils are an age-old good methods to clear negative energy out of your home, office, or any other item in everyday use (your car for instance). The strong scent of essential oils will disperse negative energy.
At the same time, it will refresh your home naturally and “invite” good spirits into your home and life. A plus point is that most of the essential oils have medicinal benefits due to their antibacterial and antiviral properties. They will make your home a much healthier place for sure.
To repel negativity and boost positivity in your home, you can use different types of essential oils, such as sweet orange, lemon, lavender, sage, peppermint and rose. This is how you prepare essential oils:
- Fill a small spray bottle with spring water (if you don’t have spring water at hand, use normal tap water).
- Mix 15-30 drops of any essential oil to your liking in it.
- Spray the essence into the air in your home, office, or car, especially in the corners, windows and doors.
- Do it once a week or whenever you feel blue or one degree under.
8. Living plants
When it comes to removing negative energy from your home, Mother Nature provides you with many options. There is a myriad of beautiful herbs and plants effective at deflecting negative energy and balancing our inner connection with the outer world, so I am always spoilt for choice when I go to the florist. Plus, living plants add so much loveliness and greenness to your home furnishings. They also ensure that you have an ample supply of oxygen in your home.
Some types of living plants that you can put in the corners of different rooms to boost positivity are: lucky bamboo, money plant, sage, holy basil, orchid, peace lily, aloe vera, rosemary and jasmine. Yet, before bringing living plants inside your home, make sure you have time to water and maintain them properly. Just like with pets, they need you attention and care to be happy and to thrive. Always get rid of dead, dying and dried parts of the plants. If your plant dies, remove it quickly.
Rock specialists point to several crystals and precious stones that can be used to ward off negative energy. Crystals release a higher vibration to break and repel negative energy away from your home and bring positive energy. They can even fight negative emotions and thoughts encountered from the people around us.
For example, the black tourmaline is one of the best crystals that you should have in your home. Just place a piece of black tourmaline near the entrance to prevent any potential negative energy from entering your home.
Another option is to place it in the very center of your home to repel negative energy outward. Among the best (if not the best) crystals that are excellent at fighting bad energy vibes are included: rose quartz, smoky quartz, hematite, jet, black onyx, amethyst, black obsidian and apache tear.
Note: To help crystals do their “work,” it is important to clean them once a week as they tend to store negative energy. Just place them in a bowl of filtered water and dry them in the sun for at least 4 hours.
According to the Tibetan tradition, the spice saffron can also be used to free your living space from “evil energies” since they do not like the strong smell of saffron. So, infuse the fresh aroma of saffron in your house to banish and “evacuate the negativity.” Sprinkle some saffron at the entrance at sunset for “best results.
” The Tibetans deem that it works as an invitation to positivity because the sunset is the time for the union of day and night. Its bright color also assists in increasing the spiritual purity around your home. You can even mix a little saffron with water, sprinkle a sponge with the mixture, and place it in any room you wish to lighten up.
Additional tips on expelling negative energy:
Natural fragrances of flowers can also expel negativity. Put fresh flowers in small bowls and place them on coffee tables or bedtables.
Simply walk in a room and chant a prayer or mantra to allow positivity to seep into the house. You can even play an audio recording of any prayer daily (in the early morning or late afternoon).
Light scented candles, incense or your fireplace, if you have one (fire is a powerful purification tool, but it takes a great caution to use it!)
You can also burn lemon or orange peels. Their pleasant and uplifting smell also works to repel any lower energy circulating in your room.
Finally, meditation creates vibrations that help sack negativity from within you as well as from your home.
