We all know the health benefits of the unprocessed and raw honey, but scientists from Australia recently made an amazing discovery – one particular type of honey can kill just about every bacteria out there.
The study was published in the European Journal of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, it is really important now, when almost all top antibiotics are not efficient, particularly against the “superbugs.”
The type of honey in called manuka honey, produced in New Zealand and it is also known as jelly bush honey.
It became very popular in the last couple of years there had even been shortages and scams, leading manuka producers to request trademark protection.
Manuka Honey Kills Superbugs and MRSA
Manuka honey is made by be eating the nectar of Leptospermum Scoparium, or the manuka bush and tea trees that can only be found in New Zealand and Australia.
In the conducted studies, researchers discovered that the honey destroyed all tested pathogens and bacteria. Manuka honey can be applied on the skin to eliminate cuts, insects bites and infections and it can also be consumed internally.
The greatest difference of manuka honey in the study was that none of the superbugs destroyed by manuka honey could not build up immunity, which is a usual issue with modern antibiotics.
“New antibiotics usually have short mean life, because the bacteria quickly become resistant to them,” stated Dr. Dee Carter of the Sydney’s School of Microbial and Molecular Biosciences. “A large number of pharmaceutical companies stopped the production of antibiotics because it is difficult to recover costs. The development of alternative treatments can save many lives.”
Dr. Carter claims that manuka honey has methyglyoxal – a compound that combines with other compounds to cause destruction of the bacteria.
