According to a recent British survey, over 90% of currently used dish sponges in households contain a large concentration of bacteria. If taken that these bacteria pose a serious health threat, this is really alarming! British experts from the Global Hygiene Council found that more than 85% of people don’t wash their dish sponge at a temperature high enough to kill the bacteria that thrives in them. As found in their research, sponges commonly used for dish washing contain six times more bacteria than bathroom doorknobs, which are considered a major source of disease and infection.
Sponges make the perfect environment for bacterial growth because they are constantly wet, which is extremely favorable for bacteria proliferation.
In addition, the research revealed that about 90% of dish sponges contain more than a billion bacteria, 60% of them contain the dangerous Escherichia coli, and 25% have a large concentration of Pseudomonas spp. which is commonly linked to eye and skin infections.
To prevent the health risks dish sponges, which we use every day, bring about, follow these tips:
After each washing-up, rinse the sponge well with hot water, and every two days, wash it thoroughly with an antibacterial detergent.
Change the dish sponge every two weeks.
You can use the sponge longer if you boil it or wash it at temperatures higher than 6ooC. You can also wash it in your dishwasher.
To clean the kitchen counter, use antibacterial wipes instead of the dish sponge.
