New Study: Coconut Oil Better Than Toothpaste

Team - 3:01 AM

Recently, there was a research conducted at the Athlone Institute of Technology, analyzing the effects of different natural oils on typical mouth bacteria. Unsurprisingly, the winner was the coconut oil.

This result was a continuation of an earlier study, according to which digested milk hindered the attaching of Streptococcus mutans to teeth enamel.

The Future Toothpaste- Enzyme-modified Coconut Oil

According to scientists, the treated oil with digestive enzymes inhibits the growth of many bacteria in our mouth effectively, including S. mutans.

S. mutans is a bacterium that produces acid which leads to tooth decay. It affects a lot of children, or 60 to 90% of them, as well as adults living in industrialized countries.

Although the fighting properties of the coconut oil’s bacteria are well known, the studies involved at the Autumn Conference of the Society for General Microbiology at the University of Warwick, showed that a coconut oil which is enzyme-treated, can prevent thrush by destroying the Candida albicans yeast.

This research is highly beneficial for the oral health, but they also analyze the coconut oil’s effects on the gut health in general.

Usage of Coconut Oil for Improved Oral Health

With just a spoonful of this oil, you’ll improve your oral health in general. It doesn’t have fluoride in its content, and it’s more effective than a mouth wash or your toothpaste.

Take a spoonful of extra virgin coconut oil, and swish it around in your mouth in a period of 15-20 minutes. Do not swallow it, since it’ll contain your mouth’s dirt. Spit it and rinse your mouth with fresh water.

This is the recipe for the home made toothpaste
  • ½ cup coconut oil
  • 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda
  • 15-30 drops of peppermint essential oil
First melt the coconut oil, and then mix it with the rest of the ingredients. Pour the mixture in a glass jar and let it cool. Your home made toothpaste is now ready to use as any other toothpaste.
