For most of us, our lives are completely littered with toxins, from the polluted air we breathe indoors and out, the chemicals we use to clean with, from the food we eat and in some cases from the water we drink; toxins from our environment are simply unavoidable.
Luckily, there are some very simple detoxification methods that we can incorporate into our daily lives to assist our bodies with flushing out these toxins. To detox simply means to abstain from or rid the body of toxic or unhealthy substances.
You can quite easily cut down your exposure to unwanted toxins by choosing more natural plant based and homemade personal care products, (check out this list for The Top Five Homemade Personal Care Products) biodegradable natural household cleaners, choosing organic fruits and vegetables whenever possible, drinking spring or purified water etc. Here are the top 5 simple detox tips that you can easily incorporate into your daily life.
1. Lemon Water
Upon waking, mix 500-1000 ml of warm water with at least the juice of half of a lemon. Drink the entire mixture before ingesting anything else in the morning. Warm lemon water helps to purify and stimulate the liver, and because the liver is the principle organ of detoxification it makes sense that lemon water and detoxification go hand and hand.
2. Keep Hydrated
Throughout the day it is extremely important to be conscious of the amount of water that you are consuming. This is even more important if you are a regular coffee, soda, or tea drinker because it takes your body more water to flush out these fluids, which can leave you dehydrated. Water flushes out toxins and waste from the body and transports nutrients to where they need to go. In fact, our kidney system has filtering capabilities that are totally dependent upon water in order for them to work. The kidneys remove excess waste products from blood, eliminate toxic substances in the urine and receive water-soluble toxins from liver processing. Try to keep water by your side throughout the majority of the day, this will remind you to drink more often.
3. Dry Brushing
Dry brushing is an amazing ancient practice that has been used for centuries by Scandinavians and Russians. Essentially, it is a method that involves brushing the skin with a brush made out of natural fibers to remove the outer layer of skin that is regenerated every 24 hours. It can help detox by stimulating the lymph vessels to drain toxic mucoid matter into specific organs, in this way we can detoxify the entire system. 4. Deep Breathing
I did say these detox methods were simple, didn’t I? I don’t think it gets any simpler than this – deep breathing. It may sound crazy that something as simple as breathing – something we are naturally doing at all times anyway, could be one of the best ways to detox the body. Natural authorities like Dr. Andrew Weil back up the method of deep breathing for detoxification purposes. Oxygen helps your body to absorb vitamins and nutrients more efficiently, which in turn creates more white bloods cells, which helps to speed up the process of ridding the old toxic substances within your body. When your lymphatic system is charged with lots of oxygen it naturally leads to detoxification of the body. Try Dr. Weil’s recommended 4-7-8 Deep Breathing Exercise. He recommends three reps of this exercise done twice a day for best results:
- Place the tip of your tongue against the ridge behind your upper teeth and exhale completely through your mouth so that you make a whoosh sound.
- Close your mouth and inhale deeply through your nose for a count 4, hold your breath for 7 counts, then exhale through your mouth for a count of 8.
- Repeat three times.
Not only is this a great way to relax at the end of a long week and a great excuse for some “you time,” but taking a bath can also be a great way to detox. Specifically when you add about 1 cup of Epsom salts, ½ cup of baking soda and some lavender essential oil. This can draw out toxins, lower stress related hormones, balance your pH levels and leave you feeling utterly relaxed.
